The purpose of the Los Angeles Rising Study Group is to discuss theory and apply it to our practice, here in Los Angeles.
We will start a nine-session reading on the theory of intercommunalism by Huey P. Newton on Sunday, November 5th 2023. We will meet biweekly (skipping holidays) from 4:00 to 5:30 PM PT until March 17th 2024. Our meetings will mostly take place by Zoom with some in person events.
Each meeting will begin with introductions (15 minutes), followed by a brief presentation on the reading (20 minutes), and then a facilitated discussion using sociocratic rounds (50 minutes). We will end with 5 minutes of announcements.
We welcome anyone to participate, especially if you want to build and fight for a liberated city of Los Angeles. Please try to commit to attending all nine sessions. We will provide you with a copy of the readings by email.
Last, we know that everyone is busy, life during late stage capitalism doesn’t always allow us the luxury of reading 30 pages in two weeks. We encourage you to join us even if you haven’t done the readings. That’s why we will review the readings at the start of each meeting. The purpose of this study group is to grapple with the ideas and translate them into action for Los Angeles.
